Karla's holiday party...

DSC02858

Karla is having a "What do you love about your Holiday home" party on her blog today.  I totally forgot about it, so of course the tree isn't quite done, and there are not piles of beautifully wrapped presents (sorry, daydreaming), but I do have a few new photos of the family room and kitchen...

I've already posted pictures of my dining room and family room, you can scroll down a few posts to see those ...here are some additional photos of the vintage dresser in the family room...I was going for the shabby chic feel here...DSC02995

I love decorating for Christmas, and really love old vintage decorations, things passed down from my grandmother or found at a flea market...We never pass up a box of glass ornaments at the flea market! The older I get, the more I value tradition at Christmas.  With my children ages (almost) 18 & 21 I find myself getting SO sentimental.  I cried today when I heard the song "I'll be home for Christmas", because my daughter will be coming home from college next week, and that is the best gift a mother can receive!

We have several "collections" of Christmas things, and every year when we take them out, someone will say "I forgot we had that" or "I remember that", it's like finding treasure in your own house! The photo above is a collection of Christmas books on the coffee table in the family room...and on the mantel you can see a bit of our vintage glass tree topper collection.

In the kitchen...

We have a set of Christmas dishes my mother bought me years ago...we use them for the whole month of December...it's tradition..

Here is a view of the sunroom from the kitchen, you can see the tree in progress...the sunroom opens to the kitchen and family room, so we put the tree there and you can see it from all 3 rooms...we buy a fresh Frasier Fir, 10 feet tall, and we have to COMPLETELY move EVERY piece of furniture to have it in front of the big window...a pain in the neck, but worth it in the end...

DSC03131

I added some greenery to the chandelier in the kitchen, and then a beaded garland, and tied on crystals from the hardware store (Home Depot)...it's fun to add little details here and there...

DSC03134

On the kitchen counter I filled the big jar with ornaments and more beaded garland, and stuck with a gold/silver/copper kind of theme this year...

Vintage mercury glass and glitter...I love the way everything sparkles at night when the candles are lit...

Tomorrow I will be posting the living room, and Friday the sunroom and the TREE! Thank you so much for stopping by...please do come again! xo suzanne

Your shabby chic look is great. We too have a collection of Christmas books that we put out during the holidays. It looks like the top book is one we have by Joan Walsh Englund. We keep ours in a little chair by the hearth where little hands can reach and read. Your home is lovely. Merry Christmas, Miss Sandy

Yours looks beautiful!

Suzanne,

Your home is such a beautiful treasure, full of love and cherished memories. I love each and every piece. I cry at that song too, and this year I realized, my daughter IS already home! (don't tell anyone, they'll think I've lost it.)
Thanks so much for the beautiful tour.

Beautiful and love your flower pin tree - Merry Christmas and Blessings - Rachael:)

What beautiful vintage pieces and mercury glass. You've decorated so beautifully and I know what you mean about being nostaglic over the children. We have an 18 and 21 year old as well as ones 20 and 26 and only two will be able to be with us for Christmas. I don't think we will ever get over the empty nest. I work very hard not to think lest I sniffle the entire time however we have so many blessings to be thankful for and are as they are all happy and healthy. Have a lovely Christmas.
